Chimney Top is a 5.3 mile out-and-back hike to one of the peaks of the North Fork Mountain range in Cabins, West Virginia.
The trail begins off of Smoke Hole Road where parking is available in front of the signage and along other pull-offs. Be sure to get there early, as the parking lot fills up quick. A friend and I completed this trail on a Saturday in October and it was quite busy!

The greater portion of the trail consists of rocky switchbacks as you gain over 1,900 feet of elevation. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of forgetting trekking poles for this hike. However, I soon realized they are helpful and ended up finding a stick to use.
Although this trail was not overly strenuous for pets, we did not take ours as there are no water sources located along the trail. Even backpackers in this area stash water since there are no places to fill up. Our dogs like water (to drink and cool off in) on hikes so I did not feel comfortable subjecting them to this hike.

Nearing the ridge line, there is a slight break in elevation gain. Continuing out the ridge, there are several opportunities for views.

After a while, the trail becomes more rocky, with scrambles in some places. Then, the North Fork Mountain Trail continues straight and the Chimney Top Trail turns right. This intersection had a small carin and a piece of pink flagging tape tied to a tree limb. The trail becomes nearly vertical at this point but is washed out and well defined. Follow this trail to the peak of the mountain. At the top, there are a couple of campsites.
Upon passing through one last sliver of vegetation the “Chimney Top” becomes visible.

There are countless ways to climb around on the rocks here and many unofficial paths around the area. Please use your best judgement while exploring.

The overlook is very popular among hikers and is home to the classic climbing parody Almost Alpine.

Overall, this is an awesome hike with breath-taking views. Although it is open year-round, my suggestion would be to visit in the fall. The West Virginia landscape is glorious, but the contrast of the yellow aspens among the pines and other colorful leaves was stunning!
